1. I'm interested in having something made, how do I start the order?
First, I like to thank you and I look forward to working with you on your horse hair creation.
Let me know what design or designs you are interested in. I will also need to know much and what kind of horse hair you have or if you would prefer hair from my collection.
Be ready to have a measurement of your wrist as well. I will need it to size your bracelet.
If this is a gift, then a general Men's/Women's Small, Medium, Large, etc will get me in the right direction.
Once we work out the details, I will give you my mailing address to send the hair for me to work on.
I will let you know when the hair arrives safely. Sometimes, I get backed up between working full time and keeping up with orders, so sometimes, it takes me an extra day or so to get back with you. Don't hesitate to check in if I don't immediately contact you. I'll answer as soon as I can.
If I'm using horse hair that you send me, I don't take payment until after your order is finished.
Once your order is ready, I will send photos for you to approve your creations.
When everything is approved, I can send you an invoice via paypal or set up a reserved listing for you via my etsy shop.
You can also make your order from there as well https://thesugarlady.etsy.com
Q. So, how does this work?
Simply contact me via the options above to find out how much hair will be needed to complete a piece you are interested in. Once we work out how much hair is needed, if you are collecting from a horse that is still alive, please see the video bellow for tips on the best way to collect your horse's hair.
If I am creating a bracelet or cuff from you horsehair, please include your wrist size with the order information. Simply wrap a string around your wrist where
you plan to wear the bracelet, where a watch would sit, and measure then length with a ruler. I typically add 3/4" - 1" to the size of the bracelet to give room for movement. If the
item is a gift and you can't get the size, you can also just say women's or men's small, medium or large and that should give me a good idea of the size to work with.
Once hair is collected, simply place it in a clear baggy or envelope with a rubber band placed around the end and mail it. (I will give you the mailing address via email.)
I handle the rest.
Once the piece is finished, I will let you know and email a photo of the finished work. If everything looks good, then I ship it to you via Priority Mail. Shipping is an additional $6. If you prefer another shipping option, just let me know and I can let you know the cost difference.
Q. How long does it typically take?
A. It really depends on my schedule. I work full time, as well as take care of 4 lovely horses, and try to balance all that and still spend quality time with my wonderful husband. I try to schedule working on pieces during the evening, and weekends tend to be my heavy duty work days where I get most of the work done. For keepsake designs that don't have any leather in them, I try to keep the turn around time 1-2 weeks from when I receive the hair. If you need something sooner, just email me and I will do my best to work out something for you. The leather and horsehair projects tend to take longer, because I do everything by hand. All leather is hand cut, dyed, finished and waterproofed by me. I take my time with my pieces to make sure I do it right.
Currently, I am adding more than just horsehair designs to my collection of hand made things. Email about anything you are interested and I will let you know how long it will take to finish.
Q. What if I have a design in mind that I want, but I don't see it on your site?
A. I love custom work! Just let me know what you are wanting, and I will do my best to make it happen. If you have a photo of an item you are interested in creating, please email it to me, or if the image is only in your head, just let me know, and I will do what I can to bring it to life.
Q. How do you handle payment?
A. I accept payment via PayPal or money order. If paying via PayPal, once everything is approved via the photos I send, you can send a secure payment through their site. My email associated with PayPal payments is firstname.lastname@example.org I also take money orders. You can send paymentn with the horsehair if you like or wait until the project is finished to mail the money order. I will ship the item out once payment is received.
Q. How do I collect hair from my horse for a keepsake or bracelet?
A. I have created a short video to help show how I like to collect horsehair for my projects.
Q. What happens to the extra hair?
A. I send any left over hair back to you unless you request otherwise. The remaining hair will be neatly bound at the end and cleaned for you to keep.
